However, it is believed that the structure is much older. Indeed, the name could lead you to believe that it is a defence. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the Masseria is placed on the course of the Francigena or Romea Way, a network of streets that from Western Europe, particularly from France, led to South Europe up to Rome and from there continued towards Apulia, where there were the ports of embarkations to the Holy Land, which was the pilgrim and crusader destination.
\nThe feature that makes Masseria Rifisa one of a kind is the conservative renovation of its original core.
\nThe Masseria is built around an ancient structure, the so-called “pajara“, a typical Apulian structure, especially of Salento area, consisting of a single room in the shape of a truncated cone, without windows to the outside.
\nOriginally Rifisa was designed to be a rural house where the \u2018massaro\u2019 (the farmer) lived. He took care of animal breeding, milk production and field cultivation. Around the \u2018pajara\u2019 there were the places designed to various activities.
\nThe ancient Masseria was composed of an internal courtyard and the stables. In the late 18th century, the tobacco factory was built and added to the original core.
