History
The tobacco, the wealth of Salento and of Masseria Rifisa.
Reliable sources of the structure are from 1700, to which the first cadastral findings date back. However, it is believed that the structure is much older. Indeed, the name could lead you to believe that it is a defence. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the Masseria is placed on the course of the Francigena or Romea Way, a network of streets that from Western Europe, particularly from France, led to South Europe up to Rome and from there continued towards Apulia, where there were the ports of embarkations to the Holy Land, which was the pilgrim and crusader destination.
The feature that makes Masseria Rifisa one of a kind is the conservative renovation of its original core.
The Masseria is built around an ancient structure, the so-called "pajara", a typical Apulian structure, especially of Salento area, consisting of a single room in the shape of a truncated cone, without windows to the outside.
Originally Rifisa was designed to be a rural house where the ‘massaro’ (the farmer) lived. He took care of animal breeding, milk production and field cultivation. Around the ‘pajara’ there were the places designed to various activities.
The ancient Masseria was composed of an internal courtyard and the stables. In the late 18th century, the tobacco factory was built and added to the original core.
In 2017 renovations to transform the structure into the current Agriresort were started off.

The Agriresort structure is totally made with local materials, such as ‘pietra leccese’ (typical stone from Lecce) and ‘carparo di Caprarica’ (a calcareous stone from Caprarica) and preserves the ancient charm of Salento rural style. The interiors also reflect the deep bond with this land, infusing the harmony of the surrounding environment through refined tailor-made furnitures crafted by experienced local artisans.
The Tobacco Room still preserves the ancient architecture of the factory, an open space divided into two naves topped with characteristic star vaults.
