Masseria
History
Masseria Rifisa history has its roots in Azienda Agraria owned by Greco’s family; they are important producers of excellent extra virgin olive oil, and they are now the most well-known.
Masseria structure dates back to 1700, according to the first sources found on land registry. What makes Masseria Rifisa unique, even now, is the fact that it develops around an old building: the so-called “pajara”. It is a traditional Puglian structure consisting of a large truncated cone-shaped room without windows, particularly spread in Salento.
Initially, the structure was sharecropper’s house and there were other areas used for milk production or animals’ shelter. In fact, Masseria Rifisa had a courtyard and some cowsheds.
In 1940 the structure became a tobaccos farm; rooms have been modified and restored and, nowadays, it is used for other purposes.
